Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about ordering, shipping, and how we make our editions. If you cannot find your answer here, reach out any time at read@heirloombookstores.com.

01 · Getting your books

Shipping & delivery

How do your dispatch windows work?

We group orders into two production runs each month. If you order between the 1st and the 15th, your order joins the first run. If you order between the 16th and the end of the month, it joins the second. We call these two points our cutoffs.

The shipping timeline for each edition is always shown on its product page at the time you order, so the date you see when you buy is the date that applies to your order. If a date looks out of date or is missing, contact us at read@heirloombookstores.com before ordering and we will confirm the current timeline.

How do you pack and check the books?

Every edition is inspected by hand before it leaves us, and packed to travel safely. We use a combination of double bubble wrap and corrugated rolls to cushion each book, add foam padding for the more delicate editions, and place everything inside a sturdy corrugated box for stability in transit. This layered approach is designed to get your books to you in pristine condition.

Once my order ships, how long will it take to arrive?

We ship worldwide. Once your order is dispatched it typically takes 2 to 10 days to arrive, depending on your destination and the carrier. We use trusted couriers such as FedEx and DHL, and your tracking link will always show the latest estimate.

Do you ship to my country, and what about import charges?

Yes, we ship to customers all over the world. If you are ordering from outside the US, any local import duties or taxes are set by your own country rather than by us. For US orders, any additional charges are covered.

I ordered several books. What will my shipping timeline be?

When you order more than one book, we normally ship everything together in a single package to keep your shipping cost lower. This means your delivery timeline is based on the edition in your order that takes the longest to produce.

If you would prefer to receive your books as they become ready, you can request a split shipment for an additional cost. Just reach out and we will set it up.

02 · If something is not right

Returns, refunds & damage

What if my order arrives damaged?

Every edition is packed to travel safely, but couriers are not always gentle, and on rare occasions a mistake can happen on our side too. If your order arrives with significant damage, such as torn pages, a detached cover, or heavy warping, contact us within 7 days of delivery with clear photos and we will make it right, whether that means a replacement or a refund.

Please note that small handcrafted variations, like a slightly bent edge or a little colour seepage on a printed edge, are part of the character of a made by hand book. You can find the full details on our Returns and Refunds page.

Can I return or exchange an item?

Because each edition is made to order specifically for you, we are not able to accept general returns or exchanges. The editions are also delicate, which makes return shipping risky. Your satisfaction still matters to us though, so if anything arrives damaged, contact us right away and we will find the best possible resolution.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

You can request to cancel your order within 24 hours of placing it. After that, because each edition is made to order, we may not be able to cancel it.

A cancellation fee applies to all cancellations, including those made within the 24 hour window. To be clear, this fee is not charged by us and we do not keep any part of it. It reflects the non-refundable transaction fee that our payment provider retains on every completed order, even when that order is later refunded. It is typically up to 4.4% plus $0.30 USD and is deducted from your refund. If you have any questions about a cancellation, just ask and we will help.

03 · How they are made

Our craft & editions

Are these editions in stock and ready to post?

No. Every Heirloom edition is made to order rather than kept on a warehouse shelf.

Once you place your order, your edition enters production, where it receives its custom finishes, such as sprayed or stenciled edges, foiling, illustrated endpapers, and other design elements. Only after it has been completed and quality checked is it prepared for dispatch.

This approach takes longer than buying a standard retail book, but it allows us to create editions that are truly special rather than mass-produced. Your estimated shipping window is always shown on the product page before you place your order, so you’ll know what to expect from the start.

We’d rather be honest about the time it takes to create something exceptional than promise unrealistic shipping dates.

Who actually creates the edges and special finishes?

Every Heirloom edition starts with us. Our small in-house design team creates the covers, printed edges, endpapers, and finishing details, and for special projects we commission artists we credit by name. The art is made by people who love these books. If you would like to know more about how a particular edition was made, please reach out.

Are your Saga and Lore Editions officially licensed?

Yes. Our Saga and Lore Editions are produced under agreement with the publishers and authors whose work they celebrate. When you buy an Heirloom Saga or Lore Edition, you are buying an edition made with permission and care, not a bootleg.

04 · Who we are

About Heirloom Books

What currency is your store in?

All prices on our website are shown in US dollars (USD).

Where is Heirloom Books registered?

Heirloom Books is officially registered in the state of Delaware. Our registered company name is Alice in Wonderland, LLC.

Where do you source your books from?

We source our books directly from publishers and authorised distributors, so you always receive the genuine article, never a pirated or unauthorised copy. We hold a strict anti piracy policy and only work with reputable suppliers who share our commitment to authenticity. If you would like to know more about our sourcing, feel free to ask.

Is Heirloom Books legit?

Yes. We know that trusting a smaller online business can feel daunting, so we work hard to be open and easy to verify. You can see real customers enjoying their editions on Instagram at @atheirloombooks, including tagged photos and reviews from our community. We are a registered US company, Alice in Wonderland, LLC in Delaware, and we are always happy to answer questions or share more information.

Are you affiliated with any other book box or brand?

No. Heirloom Books is a fully independent, standalone company. We have zero corporate, financial, operational, or legal ties to any other book subscription box or to any past external storefront. Our design, curation, production, customer service, and management are entirely our own.

We do work with printers and fulfilment partners who also serve other companies, and we are not connected to any other business that happens to share the Heirloom name.

Made by people

On AI and our art

We want to be upfront about this, because it matters to us. Heirloom art is made by people, not by AI. Despite claims made in a few online groups, we do not use AI generated art in our editions. The craft of a beautiful book is close to our hearts, and we have always treated it with respect.

We have a small in-house design team, and we credit them on our work whenever we can. If you would like to know how any edition is designed and made, please reach out. We believe in transparency, and we are always glad to share the details.

With care, the Heirloom team.

Our promise

We would rather be honest about the wait than quick with a promise we cannot keep.
